The site is located on the Eastern shore of the Ashby Broadwater with magnificent views across the shallow estuary to the far western mountains. The low hills behind the site do not block the prevailing summer sea breezes, but do leave the land exposed to powerful winter storms coming in from the west, and to the heat of the low western sun in summer.
The agreed design solution was to form the house around an asymmetrical north-facing courtyard which protects living areas from the strongest storms and coldest winds, yet opens the house to deep penetration of winter sun.
The harsh effects of low western sun across the Broadwater are controlled by deep verandahs, timber louvre banks and shade blinds.
The house is designed with separate living and bedroom wings around the central courtyard and pool, ensuring optimum cross ventilation and superb views to every habitable room.
